The Farm at Cooperstown
The first group of 16 does kidded in three days, January 20th
through January 22nd. Two does had one kid, seven does had twins
and seven does had triplets for a total of thirty seven kids. All were
born alive and seem to be doing well. These pictures are of the kids
at one to three days old.
Kids are born generally weighing between eight and
twelve pounds and are able to stand and walk within
minutes. They live on milk for the first few weeks and
then begin  nibbling on hay. They sleep for long periods
between feedings and are usually seen sleeping with
their siblings in a pile. At about four weeks we provide
creep feeds (a space that only the kids can access) with
a constant supply of grain to ensure that they get all
the food they can eat during their growth spurts. Red
crayon marks on the backs and shoulders of the kids
identify the kid's mother.
