Great Pyrenees have
powerful guarding
instinct. The breed
was developed by
shepherds in its
namesake mountains
in southwestern
Europe, protecting
flocks from predators.

By the 1600s, this
elegant white dog
had smitten the
French
nobility, and Louis
XIV declared le Chien
des Pyrenees the
Royal Dog of France.

The breed has
ancient Mastiff roots
and was bred to
patrol large expanses
and stand up to such
predators as bears
and wolves.
